Mix 11 - Web Platform and Tools Keynote Demo Script
Apr 1113It's Day 1 of the Mix 11 conference here in Las Vegas. I work for the Web Platform and Tools (that's ASP.NET, IIS, IIS Media, etc) group and I did the Web Platform demos for Scott Guthrie's part of the keynote. A lot of people in Dev and QA worked hard all year long to make some fun and cool products and as the designated talking head, I had just 16 minutes to make all of them (people + products) look good. I hope I did them all justice. We built a backend and a front end for Rob and my sie...

NuGet Package of the Week #2 - MvcMailer sends mails with ASP.NET MVC Razor Views and Scaffolding
Mar 1115Have you implemented the NuGet Action Plan? Get on it, it'll take only 5 minutes: NuGet Action Plan - Upgrade to 1.1, Setup Automatic Updates, Get NuGet Package Explorer. The Backstory: I was thinking since the NuGet .NET package management site is starting to fill up that I should start looking for gems (no pun intended) in there. You know, really useful stuff that folks might otherwise not find. I'll look for mostly open source projects, ones I think are really useful. I'll look at how th...

Mixing Razor Views and WebForms Master Pages with ASP.NET MVC 3
Jan 1125I've spent the last few weeks travelling around presenting WebMatrix, Razor and ASP.NET MVC 3 to folks. Many people have existing WebForms apps or MVC apps with WebForms Views. The question has come up a number of times, Can I mix Razor Views and WebForms Views in a single ASP.NET MVC application? The answer is, No, Yes, and Maybe, But It's Not Supported. Most commonly the scenario is that someone has an existing WebForms (ASPX) Master Page that works nicely, and they now want to include...

Integrating ASP.NET MVC 3 into existing upgraded ASP.NET 4 Web Forms applications
Jan 1106I got an interesting question recently from a gentleman who has an existing ASP.NET WebForms 2.0 application that works just fine. He's upgraded it to ASP.NET 4 and it still works great, but now he wants to add some ASP.NET MVC pages to it. He doesn't want to rewrite the application. A few years ago I did a post on Hybrid ASP.NET applications. The goal was to reinforce the point that you can have ASP.NET applications that are both WebForms and MVC (as well as WCF and ASMX Web Services and o...

BIN Deploying ASP.NET MVC 3 with Razor to a Windows Server without MVC installed
Nov 1024If someone says just bin Deploy it they mean deploy the application with the dependencies copied into the application's /bin folder, rather than running an MSI that installs the dependencies into the Global Assembly Cache (GAC). You may not have administrative control over your Web Server and your host may not want you running installers when new stuff like ASP.NET MVC 3 and Razor comes out. You'll want to bin deploy these new technologies. Here's two ways. The simple way and The Awesome...

The Weekly Source Code 57 -Controlling an Eagletron TrackerPod with C# 4, ASP.NET MVC and jQuery
Nov 1022I have a 42 HDTV in Seattle that's hooked up all the time as an Embodied Social Proxy. It's a portal between the Microsoft Redmond campus and my house here in Oregon. I've blogged about Embodied Social Proxies before as well as shot video of one for Channel 9. It's called the HanselCart around work, although recently it's stopped being a cart and now it's a whole office that folks in Building 42 can drop by and see me, er, the Virtual Me. One of the things that hasn't been 100% smooth is t...

ASP.NET MVC 3 Preview 1 Released – Channel 9 Video and Hanselminutes Podcast 224, Oh My!
Jul 1027Phil and friends released ASP.NET MVC 3 Preview 1 today. I snuck into the office of Phil Haack and Morgan the Canadian Intern to talk about the release of ASP.NET MVC 3 Preview 1 and some of the cool futures stuff that Morgan (and our fleet of interns) is working on. This video isn't only about MVC as Morgan's working on some cool CSS Sprites stuff that works nicely in WebForms that you should check out as well. Also, my two-hundred-and-twenty-fourth podcast is up and I talk more in depth ...

Use Razor as ASP.NET MVC ViewEngine
Jul 1010Since the release of Razor I could not manage time to give a deep dive into this new framework. Last night, I started to explore, the idea was to create ASP.NET MVC View Engine, yes I know the official version is coming up end of this month, but it will give me enough details of the Razor internals in the mean time. Part of the goal was to port the default ASP.NET MVC application in Razor. And here is the basic version: _Master.cshtml <!DOCTYPE html> <head> <title> @RenderSection("title")...
