ASP.NET MVC, Web API, Razor and Open Source
Mar 1228Microsoft has made the source code of ASP.NET MVC available under an open source license since the first V1 release. We’ve also integrated a number of great open source technologies into the product, and now ship jQuery, jQuery UI, jQuery Mobile, jQuery Validation, Modernizr.js, NuGet, Knockout.js and JSON.NET as part of it. I’m very excited to announce today that we will also release the source code for ASP.NET Web API and ASP.NET Web Pages (aka Razor) under an open source license (Apache 2...

OSS and .NET Year In Review 2011
Dec 1126T’is the season for “Year in Review” and “Best of” blog posts. It’s a vain practice, to be sure. This is exactly why I’ve done it almost every year! After all, isn’t all blogging pure vanity? Sadly, I did miss a few years when my vanity could not overcome my laziness. This year I am changing it up a bit to look at the intersection of open source software and the .NET community in 2011. I think it’s been a banner year for OSS and .NET/Microsoft, and I think it’s only going to get better in 20...

Dec 1111The voting for the UGIALT.net conference just ended, and just in time for the opening of the registration at noon we published, on the new web site the list of the 19 sessions chosen by the more than 180 voters: Perché a fare i preventivi facciamo così schifo? (Cristiano Rastelli) DDD Brutto Sporco e Cattivo (Alberto Brandolini) Organize your chickens: NuGet for the enterprise (Xavier Decoster) SignalR. Code, not toothpaste. Using SignalR for realtime client/server communication (Maarten ...

New NuGet.org Deployed!
Dec 1106So my last day at Microsoft ended up being a very long one as the NuGet team worked late into the evening to deployan updated version of NuGet.org. I’m very happy to be a part of this as my last act as a Microsoft employee. This is complete re-write of the gallery. Why a rewrite? We’ve learned a lot since we first launched, and our needs have evolved to the point where a rewrite made sense. The new implementation is a vanilla ASP.NET MVC 3 application and highly optimized to be a gallery wit...

Repaving your PC: the easier way
Nov 1128It"s been a while since I had to repave my laptop. I have a Windows Home Server (WHS) at home which images my PC almost daily and allows restoring it to a given point in time in less than 30 minutes. Which is awesome! And which is how I usually restore my PC into a stable state. Over the past year some hardware changes have been made of which the most noteworthy is the replacement of the existing hard drive with an SSD. A great addition, and it was easy to restore as well: swap the disks and r...

NuGet Package of Week #11 - ImageResizer enables clean ,clear image resizing in ASP.NET
Oct 1131The Backstory: I was thinking since the NuGet .NET package management site is starting to fill up that I should start looking for gems (no pun intended) in there. You know, really useful stuff that folks might otherwise not find. I'll look for mostly open source projects, ones I think are really useful. I'll look at how they built their NuGet packages, if there's anything interesting about the way the designed the out of the box experience (and anything they could do to make it better) as wel...

Entity Framework Code First Migrations: Alpha - NuGet Package of the Week #10
Jul 1128Hot on the heels of my RFC blog post on product versioning, the Entity Framework team has released Entity Framework 4.1 Code First Migrations: August 2011 CTP. Cool. And it's July, too! Or my preferred product name, Migrating Magic Unicorns 0.5. It's probably best to think of this as 0.5 Alpha Migrations for EF but that's my guess at a name and not nearly as descriptive. I showed early daily builds of EF Migrations at a few conferences recently, and encouraged folks to comment on the ADO...

Delegate feed privileges to other users on MyGet
Jun 1129One of the first features we had envisioned for MyGet and which seemed increasingly popular was the ability to provide other users a means of managing packages on another user’s feed. As of today, we’re proud to announce the following new features: Delegating feed privileges to other users – This allows you to make another MyGet user “co-admin” or “contributor” to a feed. This eases management of a private feed as that work can be spread across multiple people. Making private feeds privat...
