ASP.NET MVC, Web API, Razor and Open Source
Mar 1228Microsoft has made the source code of ASP.NET MVC available under an open source license since the first V1 release. We’ve also integrated a number of great open source technologies into the product, and now ship jQuery, jQuery UI, jQuery Mobile, jQuery Validation, Modernizr.js, NuGet, Knockout.js and JSON.NET as part of it. I’m very excited to announce today that we will also release the source code for ASP.NET Web API and ASP.NET Web Pages (aka Razor) under an open source license (Apache 2...

Using the HTML5 <input type="file" multiple="multiple"> Tag in ASP.NET
Mar 1206Per HTML5 spec the <input type="file" /> tag allows for multiple files to be picked from a single File upload button. This is actually a very subtle change that's very useful as it makes it much easier to send multiple files to the server without using complex uploader controls. Please understand though, that even though you can send multiple files using the <input type="file" /> tag, the process of how those files are sent hasn't really changed - there's still no progress information or oth...

Scott Hanselman's 2011 Ultimate Developer and Power Users Tool List for Windows
Dec 1101Everyone collects utilities, and most folks have a list of a few that they feel are indispensable. Here's mine. Each has a distinct purpose, and I probably touch each at least a few times a week. For me, util means utilitarian and it means don't clutter my tray. If it saves me time, and seamlessly integrates with my life, it's the bomb. Many/most are free some aren't. Those that aren't free are very likely worth your 30-day trial, and perhaps your money. Here are most of the contents of my ...

Microsoft dev stack vNext from Build
Sep 1115Unless you are living under a rock, you have probably heard that two days ago, at Build, Microsoft unveiled the new version of Windows, named Windows 8. Windows 8 This is revolutionary both from the consumers’ and developers’ perspectives. The UI is deeply based on the concept of the tiles of Windows Phone 7.5 “mango” and the Metro design language, and the API are now allowing applications to be written either in C#/C++ and the usual .NET/Win32, or using WinRT, basically an Object Oriented v...

ASP.NET MVC dynamic view sections
Sep 1108Earlier today, a colleague of mine asked for advice on how he could create a dynamic view. To elaborate, he wanted to create a change settings page on which various sections would be rendered based on which plugins are loaded in the application. Intrigued by the question and having no clue on how to do this, I quickly hacked together a SettingsViewModel, to which he could add all section view models no matter what type they are: 1 public class SettingsViewModel 2 { 3 public List<dynamic> ...

How to access controller methods from a view in ASP.NET MVC
Jul 1130This question has been posed in several places. One of the places is on StackOverflow here. The use case here is that my controller has important state or an important function, and I’d like to leverage it from the view. It’s not appropriate to factor out to an html helper or other view-based utility class. It is something unique to the controller. It would be very easy to just pass the controller over to the view so that the view could make use of its methods, but there is a lot of discussion...

A Simple Example That's Incredibly Complex
Jun 1130I was reading through my RSS feeds and email, just having returned from Paris and I was asked to take a look at a project from Microsoft Spain up on Codeplex. In reading the summary, it looks to be a sample application utilizing some high-end tricks from DDD (emphasis mine): This project is a sample implementation of most used patterns in Domain Oriented Architectures based on simple scenarios easy to understand (Customers, Orders, Bank Transfers, etc.).It is an Educational example, not a r...

A Better Razor Foreach Loop
Apr 1114Yesterday, during my ASP.NET MVC 3 talk at Mix 11, I wrote a useful helper method demonstrating an advanced feature of Razor, Razor Templated Delegates. There are many situations where I want to quickly iterate through a bunch of items in a view, and I prefer using the foreach statement. But sometimes, I need to also know the current index. So I wrote an extension method to IEnumerable<T> that accepts Razor syntax as an argument and calls that template for each item in the enumeration. pub...
