Two bugs in ASP.NET MVC 3 and a workaround for both
Jun 1114So I spent an hour today arsing about with a couple of ASP.NET MVC 3 bugs. One was a Routing issue that caused it to act differently to MVC 2. The second I found was a FormsAuthentication issue that insisting on sending me to /Account/Login. Amazing how this crept in really given that it was community tested to death with such a massive ASP.NET MVC following so it is a wonder they weren't weeded out and fixed before RTM. Oh well, don't pretend you don't like a challenge. Routing doesn't work t...

Modifying the default code generation/scaffolding templates in ASP.NET MVC
Mar 1128One of the things people like the most about my ASP.NE MVC 2 Ninja Black Belt Tips video, besides the Bill Cosby sweater, is the tip where I show how to modify the default CodeTemplates that are used in Code Generation in ASP.NET MVC (either version). Eilon mentioned it on an internal mailing list this week so I thought it'd be worth surfacing again in case you haven't heard of this, Dear Reader. Soon, we'll see even more powerful, flexible, and fun ways to customize your own Scaffolding ...

How was my 2010?
Jan 1113It’s the beginning of the year again, and exactly as last year, on the 13th of January I’m reviewing the year that passed against the my 2010 resolutions, and see how it went. Who did 2010 go? Before starting the list I want to add a resolutions that I didn’t disclose with my 2010 resolutions: I wanted to move out of Italy in 2010. And since now I’m living in Belgium I think the biggest goal form 2010 was accomplished. But all the other resolutions where a bit shadowed by the big effort need...

Introducing NuPack Package Management for .NET - Another piece of the Web Stack
Oct 1006Microsoft's been filling out the Web Stack with more and more right-sized LEGO pieces lately, and today ScottGu announced the developer preview of NuPack. It's a piece of the stack that's been notably missing for years and after using it for a while now, I'm not sure how I lived without it. NuPack is a package management system for .NET. The goal of NuPack is to make the process of incorporating third party libraries into your solutions as simple as possible. NuPack - The Idea Here's how ...

T4MVC generate lower case paths
Aug 1019I noticed that my URL paths that are being generated using using T4MVC's excellent MVC templating were coming out in title case. This is a problem since we try to keep all URLs lower case since Google deems URL in different cases showing the same result as duplicate content. I looked through a lot of the code that is generated by the tool and traced the problem all the way to the MyController.generated.cs file: public class ActionNamesClass { public readonly string Index = "Index"; public re...

Code-First Development with Entity Framework 4
Jul 1016.NET 4 ships with a new and much improved version of Entity Framework (EF) – a data access and OR/M library that lives within the System.Data.Entity namespace. When Entity Framework was first introduced with .NET 3.5 SP1, developers provided a lot of feedback on things they thought were missing or incomplete with that first release. The SQL team did a good job of listening to this feedback, and really focused the EF that ships with .NET 4 on addressing it. Some of the big improvements in EF...

MVC 2 in 2 Minutes!
May 1022In a couple of recent Code Camps, I’ve given my presentation: Top 10 Ways MVC 2 Will Boost Your Productivity. In the presentation, I cover all major new features introduced in MVC 2 with a focus on productivity enhancements. To drive the point home, I conclude with a final demo where I build a couple of screens from scratch highlighting many (but not all) of the features previously covered in the talk. A couple of weeks ago, I was asked to make it available online so here it is. In 2 minutes t...
